Hi claire, welcome to the forums. the 80gb will not play ps2 games as it has had the ps2 chip and emulation software removed. software emulation is a possibility in the future but sony have not said when this will be.. . One of the most annoying things about the playstation 3 is its lack of backward compatibility on some models. there are several hacks out there to do this, but most of them involve extra hardware, like the cobra-usb dongle, or downgrading, which can cause all sorts of problems..
I am not really sure to be honest. i know that in the uk the ps3 has to be updated to be able to play ps2 games. but you might be better off contacting the plays you bought it for secure info or even sony's website..
